Rules for Acceptable Files

Introduction

We only want to keep high quality files and want to be 100% transparent about what files will/won't be allowed.

Types of Restrictions

Legalities

We are obligated by international laws to not upload copyrighted material. That includes textbooks and study notes that are from other websites that have their copyright stamped onto them.

On the other hand, if there is a note that can be embedded that is being hosted on the original source, we would be glad to embed the link to it.

We are also obligated against certain rules to prevent cheating. This could be done by stealing a paper version of something and scanning it or it could be by hacking the teacher or whatever. If the teacher didn't give access of a file to the students in his/her course (students doesn't include student TAs), it should not be distributed. This includes:

  • Current assignment solutions (even if you made them yourself)
  • Future questions/solutions from assignments/tests/evaluations/etc

Moralities

We believe in providing students with a tool that helps education.

Providing the answers to their current assignments does not fall under that. Unfortunately, teachers often recycle assignment questions and students can simply copy and paste the answers verbatim. That is why we prefer against uploading assignment solutions (although assignment questions are fine).

Previous test questions give amazing preparation for evaluations. Teachers usually change up test questions. Even if they don't, people usually cannot bring previous tests into their evaluations and copy. It is difficult to predict questions. Usually, it's easier to actually learn the material than cheat by memorizing past test questions. Policies may vary from school to school.

Redundancy

We don't want to keep files that are redundant. We're students living on a student budget and we have to be living lean. That includes reducing how much data we store on our servers.

If 2 files are uploaded with the same content, we will delete the one of lower quality. That means: if you have a higher quality version of a file, please donate it. If one of the donors can prove that he/she is the owner of the file, we will keep that file. Neither donor will lose his/her acquired view points upon deletion. However, the file will no longer be accessible.

What happens when I upload a restricted file?

Redundant files

As stated above, we'll let you keep your view points.

Everyone else

Your view points will be removed and you will owe us for any pay outs that you have made. However, your account will not be deleted because that won't solve anything.
