Fresh evidence after the embedded-NUL fix is that this check misses \400: V3's string unescaper converts the three octal digits to u8, so \400 wraps to a NUL byte, while this predicate only recognizes escapes beginning with 0. The direct lane therefore accepts println('\400tail'), and TinyCC accepts the generated C, but puts stops at the wrapped NUL instead of preserving the remaining tail bytes as the checked backend does; decode three-digit octal escapes when deciding whether to promote the literal.
