For now we are able to use OpenMetrics for Vitess tracing: https://vitess.io/docs/17.0/user-guides/configuration-advanced/tracing/
OpenTelemetry is currently being actively developed as the single standard for application instrumentation under CNCF.
I think it makes sens to support both OpenMetrics and OpenTelemetry or to remove OpenMetrics completely.
Use Case(s)
We are moving our application tracing from OpenMetrics to OpenTelemetry and saw that Vitess cannot be used with OpenTelemetry.
