I've been connecting ESPs with 5V devices for quite some times now and came to the conclusion that ESP are 5V tolerant (at least in my experience). It has been confirmed elsewhere.
Likewise many 5v circuits are 3.3v compatible.

My Lay-z S100101 is no exception. I uploaded on a wemos D1 mini, hooked both ends, shared the 5v and GND, and voila, I even got the beeper music to celebrate :) Everything works flawlessly and was ready in minutes!

Many thanks man! I converted it to beer in the sun ☀️! I won't argue with you on the voltage tolerance, there is plenty of that on other sites. If it works it works and worst case you loose an ESP for a few $. I leave it to the reader to decide for now.

I use a wemos d1 mini but any other esp8266 should work.
Then you connect the pins directly to the CIO port and the display port. You just need to make sure both the display and the esp8266 gets 5v and GND from the CIO.

You can most certainly replace the Wemos D1 mini with a lolin or any other esp8266.
Just adjust the PINs in lib\BWC\BWC_6w_type1.h lines 11-12, and also the board parameter in platformio.ini accordingly.

So I flashed it. The webUI is working it connects to my wifi. I soldered the wires according to the photo. When turning on the pump. the module is receiving power via the 5v and boots up the webui. But the display does not light up nor is there any beep. Trying to turn on any of the options in the webui as well does not seem to do anything. I also used a multimeter to check whether the 5V is getting through to the display connector cables and it seems fine on that end. But seemingly no light. I thought I broke it at first but when connecting back everything originally it seems to work fine. Not sure how to diagnose this further.

Tried PCBV1 and V2 only adjusting the pin numbers that are highlighted. Reflashing and testing again seems to have the same results.

From your pictures, you should be ok.
Cross check again that the PINs are properly setup in your code.

• Just keep one definition of the cio/dsppins[]
• Did you correctly change the lib\BWC\BWC_6w_type1.h file?
• To be sure your board definition is not the culprit, use the gpio pin numbers:

Then, I would go step by step.

• check continuity from the ESP pin to the connector pins of the pump (just to make sure your connector is ok).
• Disconnect the CIO, only keep the DSP side. You should see some values on the webUI.

So I kept everything as is and what I tried is this. I just plugged it back to my pc via usb. And redid the flashing steps

First I did the arrow upload

Then the LittleFS data upload afterwards. Although it still saved my SSID and didn't overwrite it to defaults. After flashing it in the sequence above. I plugged it back in and it came up working fine. The screen turned on with the jingle and everything seems to work now.

Not sure what actually did the trick for the last part. But it works now!

It would make your life easier to define pcb_v2 and use that pinout. No crossing wires on the nodeMCU. They use a mini with a different layout.

The sound coming up says 2 things:
1, Your ESP is not dead
2. Your power lines (5V and GND) are OK in the whole chain.

Ok, again, step by step:

1. Take out the ESP
2. Plug it to USB
3. Open the Serial monitor on platformio and look for an IP address if it does connect to your access point. Else it should start the wifi access point.
4. Open the web interface, make sure you see the interface (if you have a 404, look for the doc, you forgot to upload the file system)

Your BWC_6w_type1.h configuration matches the one you have on your drawing, no need to change it.
Also, you are in PCB v1, so make sure you kept #define PCB_V1 uncommented in lib\BWC\model.h

Once you have reached this step, you can plug back the ESP on your PCB.

First, unplug the display, and plug in your pump. You will not hear the music but you should get the wifi and the web interface with the temp of the water.

Then, unplug the pump, plug the display and plug back in... All should be ok now.

Ok I ran through all your steps again, everything was as stated.

I decided to remove the resistors off of the display cables, Now The unit powers up, the display shows the IP scroll past.
I now have full control of the unit via the ESP, but the display buttons do not work on the display.

So one step away.

Does the display buttons not working mean I still need resistors of maybe a different resistance?

The temperature is showing on display and webgui and the pump responds to presses on display, but when I change something in webgui nothing happens, if I turn on bubbles the switch switches back to off. I can save settings but I cannot restart esp from webgui. What have I missed?

Want to try this as well I have the s100101 pump model. From the instructions I assume I just change the model to the miami2021 since it seems to have the same features as the cancun which I have. Since using the wemos d1 im not sure if its necessary to specify the board type as it doesnt seem to be mentioned anywhere. (Basing of the pdf instructions). This seems like the easiest option with the wemos d1 and the jst-sm 6 pin connector. Everything else seems clear to me apart from the changes needed to be made in VScode

Yes, you will need to set the board seeting to Wemos D1 as this property does the right translating between the D* named pins (D1,D2 etc.) and the internal GPIO (5,4,0 etc.).

To set the board type as WemosD1 Mini in PlatformIO, set this line in platformio.ini:

I've followed the various folks in here but am having issues. I have an Ibiza with pump S100105. When turning on, I get the jingle, the ESP boots up, I can access the WebUI, but nothing works on the WebUI for changing anything on the pump. The buttons on the pump do not work as well.

I've checked continuity between the pins/connectors so that's all good.

I'm at a loss right now of what else to check. Does anyone have any ideas?

Good job on the testing! Well, it's hard to say what is wrong. There has been a lot of posts regarding extra resistors btwn cio and esp, but it should not be necessary when changing pinout to V2B. Problem was with some NodeMCUs but maybe applies here as well. So, I'd try this;
Shorten the wires and switch to PCB_V2B. Note the 'B'. If you don't see it as an option in model.h you need to download the latest version. Now that you know how to do the hwtest, you can do it again to see if you put the wires right. There is info about the pcb versions in the latest (development) build instructions.
You don't need an actual pcb to do this. It's just a different pin out.

I have an odd situation Im not quite able to figure out.

I have connected everything correctly according to the schematics above, but hwtest (slightly modified to ensure it loads the correct gpio pins) still fails when shorting the two connectors:

CIO to DSP pin 4 => 13 success!
CIO to DSP pin 2 => 12 success!
CIO to DSP pin 0 => 14 fail! Errors: 500

DSP to CIO pin 13 => 4 success!
DSP to CIO pin 12 => 2 success!
DSP to CIO pin 14 => 0 success!

The odd thing is that 0 => 14 always show 500 errors. It makes me believe there is something that I need to do with the d1 mini. Some kind of fuse or flag?

Hi, at first thanks to all working on this project!
I configured a lolin nodemcu v3 according to the settings, connected the pins and got it working for one time.
Switching on, the display was dark, and only a little beep to hear. I was able to turn on and off the pump, display activates and everything seems to be ok.
I switched off the power and wanted to restart the whole process to document with video… but now nothing is working anymore.
ESP just blinks 1 time, no WiFi any more or any other reaction.
Trying to reflash, but it is stating there is no device connected.
Did I damage my ESP? The 5V was connected to Vim pin

8266 uses 3.3 V internally. Vin goes to a linear voltage regulator that feeds the chip. All GPIO pins are 3.3V but should be 5V tolerant. The pump has 5V signals but it shouldn't fry the pins. It can be fried by other things too though, like shorting output pins to ground.

More interesting is why blue LLC is not working properly, but I will try with red one next.
I just tried to do the hardware test and had strange behaviour:
Connecting the male and female let the ESP "freeze" (permanent blue LED) and it was no longer available via WiFi. After removing, the WiFi worked again (LED blinking). G and 5V on Vin connected to a 5V source.

So I started from the scratch, build up a new PWC and nodemcu and it looks like working! Not 100% but ok.
The first nodemcu is not damaged, I was able now to re-flash it. Was a problem just with COM port and/or drivers.
On the first PWC it looks like some solder points were not correctly done.

As there is just something which is not 100% working (no start on repowering the spa), but this will continue on in Successfully replicated on S100101 ...

Hi All, I bought a spa about 2 weeks ago and was pretty much straight away annoyed but the lack of config options. So I googled and came across this project a couple of days ago. I had a D1_mini at home and flashed it. So far everything looks good, just waiting for the JST connectors to arrive so I can install it. In the meantime, I saw that people have successfully integrated with the Model S100101 and S100105. Mine is S100103. Does anyone have the same model and can share his experience? Hi, except that you are out of spec by skipping the LLC, E02 is no flow error. If you run on the bench for testing you will get this if starting the pump.

If you don't see the temp and have [ABC] something I'd suspect is not wired right. Verify you have +5V between 5V and ground wires as indicated in the thread wiring pic example. my newer model has wires flipped from one of the early reference pics. I was getting -4.6V. Once I flipped my wiring wires 180 from the pic and got +5V on my board once plugged into the spa pump, all was good.

I wouldn't expect it to work not plugged in as there is no feedback from the pump/controller. But now that you mention it, think I might have observed the same thing on the desk. toggles would just bounce back. I assumed it was hooked up to the pump unit.

I am going to be doing it on a Paris which I think is the same model as a Vegas. Is it possible to set the time the heater comes on each night, for example set it so it heats on a timer between 11pm and 5am?

Yes. Below is my normal schedule. when I want it hot, I drop in a 2nd heater from a 2nd circuit and add a one time event to set temp to 102.

heater desired temp and pump operation are separate operations. But yes, notice I start my pump at 10AM then off at 2PM each day. (command queue is a bit jumbled because it was after 10AM when I took screenshot, so date incremented to tomorrow for anything after 10AM)

Hi there. Thank you for great tutorial. I meet some problem.... Soft is download to d1 mini but when I did a wiring like in instruction:

• when I start I do not have any sound,
• I can connect wifi to D1 it shows temperature on web interface
• I can not switch anything (when I switch the pomp switch is coming back to off position on web interface to off position after one sec.
• Display on spa shows nothing, when i try to press power button on spa i hear a little sound like bip.

I was traing to figure out what is wrong and connect wire by wire one by one and:
when I connect a d1 and just power wires to display it works (it displays temperature), when I connect third wire yellow to d7 screen goes off, to turn it on I need to connect yello directly to wire goes from spa (not thru D1) .

any Idea what is wrong?

I have uploaded the software on a lolin d1 mini. The webserver is working. When I install the ESP in the pump, it boots up, but the display is dark and the buttons don't react. I have tried every combination of PCB layout in the settings. The lolin pinout should match the wemos d1 mini - right? I'm am at a loss. I have checked for continuity in all the connections.. I have the Grenada Spa with a S100101 pump.

No! You feed it 5V which is stepped down to 3.3V. Pins are 3.3V and CIO/DSP expects 5V

I've the same pump and tried the setup with the Wemos D1 mini. I ordered 2, both USB-C. One was a D1 mini v3 pro, the other had no version number. Both didn't work. Webinterface was working perfect so the software was OK. But if the display lighted up (that only happened once) I only heard little beeps. Pump and heater didn't work at all. Tried and redid al the soldering. But same result. Tried switching IO pins etc in the software but didn't get it to work.

Not giving up on this project I order a Wemos D1 Mini v2 with micro USB connector. And everything worked flawlessly within minutes. So I can confirm you definitely need the v2. Probably indeed the v2 is more 5V tolerant.

This year, my friend purchased same pool, but it has JST white connectors between device and display
Ant it's not just connectors, pinout is not the same. I've found +5V and GND, but confused about other pins.

First of all, a big thank you to everyone here who is driving the project forward.
Today, I connected my ESP D1 Mini between the display and the pump controller.

After switching it on, I was able to use the pump’s display as usual.
On my phone, I can also see the current temperature. But that’s all – I can’t see whether the pump is running or if the bubbles are on. I can’t change anything. Changing temp I can see in MQTT
When I press "Take control," I get error E02 and have to disconnect the system from power to reset it.

In the hardware configuration, I set 4-wire 54123 air. For CIO and DSP I selected custom CIO and DSP.
For CIO, RX is yellow on D4 and TX is green on D3.
For DSP, TX yellow on D2 and RX is green on D5.
I think this is correct, otherwise the commands from the display wouldn’t reach the controller.

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong here or where I could start looking?
