Compatibility with older PHP versions

Today we've got an outdated project that still runs on PHP 5.6, but are considering to go for PHP 7.4 soon. The current release requires PHP 8.1.

What are the odds of having a release that's compatible with older PHP versions?

I could contribute a PR with the changes, but am wondering whether it would be considered.

What are your thoughts on this?

PHP 5.6 is too old. I think it did not work with the new PSR, such as Http interface, etc.

Yea, I imagine the percentage of people still using it is quite minimal. I'm thinking about PHP 7.4.

Does this sound feasible? Could it live in another branch and yet be tagged and released?
