The twitter adapter does not currently (via configuration) support a variable search query.

Enable this ability through an SpEL expression.

Nothing to do.
Now all MessageSources are exposed as beans in the application context with id [ADAPTER_ID].source.
So it's just enough to get the SearchReceivingMessageSource bean and change its query property value. E.g.

<twitter:search-inbound-channel-adapter id="searchAdapter" query="#foo">
     <poller fixed-rate="5000"/>
</twitter:search-inbound-channel-adapter>

<int:outboud-channel-adapter id="changeQueryChannel" expression="@'searchAdapter.source'.query = payload"/>

And send the Message<?> with payload as a new value to the changeQueryChannel.

Note, all inbound-channel-adapters are endpoint without message context, so there is no reason to add SpEL noise there.
