I always am on auto and always hit the limits. I have spent only 30% of my monthly allowance, and it is April 29. This "hit limit" doesn't make sense at all. |

You need to make aws account with a credit card and then you get 200$ in credits on aws to use on selected products there you can pick bedrock and host Claude code there |

@martinwoodward Please reconsider this change. Many students relied specifically on models like Sonnet and Opus for studying, research, and solving complex programming problems. These models were the reason Copilot was so helpful for us. Without them, Copilot becomes far less useful for academic work. Most students cannot afford paid plans, so this change does not push us to upgrade it only pushes us away from using Copilot. We respectfully ask you to restore at least limited access to these models for students. |

@ghaif You have to understand there are verified educators here who are saying this. the fre eplan runs out the moment you graduate so I think its justified, plus there are so many more solutions like more rate limiting or day wise limiting or making the requests 10x instead of 1 x or 3x but gatekeeping the models, that just shows no cinsideration. We have to also remember that Microsoft & Github ensure that these same students who eventually join / start ocmpanies will take the familiarity of these tools with them. |

it's not being greedy, it's about betraying us with no notice. Look at the recent changes made to Scratch. They changed their ToS to something very anti-user friendly and terrible. Scratch is completely free though, so we shouldn't be mad about something that's free, right? Is that what you're saying? Your family didn't have to raise you. They didn't have to feed you or care for you. So if your family stopped helping you ever at all without any notice, would you be sad? |

You're right.. maybe he is a lifelong learner. But so are we 😭😭 I was grinding every day, actually learning and trying to build real stuff. And I really need you to bring back Claude Opus! Force tighter limits, cap the PRUs at 100/month, whatever.. just please don't take it away completely 🙏😭 |

Update April 27: As part of these reliability updates, GPT-5.3-Codex has been removed from the model picker for the Copilot Student plan. Honestly this feels really disappointing. The student plan was valuable because it gave access to strong models like Claude and GPT. Removing them and then adding stricter limits makes it much less useful in real scenarios like assignments or projects. I understand that costs and scaling are real concerns, but right now it feels like the experience is getting worse while still being presented as a benefit. If the goal is to keep it sustainable, it would make more sense to keep access to stronger models with clear and reasonable limits instead of removing them entirely. Right now it feels less like a student focused program and more like something that pushes users toward paid plans. I think most students would prefer limited access to powerful models rather than unrestricted access to weaker ones. |

First, you removed the Claude models from the student plan (Haiku hardly counts as a useful model). It’s not that I can’t understand it from an economic standpoint. The new models are expensive, and the student plan has to be subsidized by the paid plans. But with the remaining models, the whole thing just doesn’t make sense anymore. Oh, and one more thing: What impact will the change on June 1 have on the student plan? I haven’t been able to find any information on that yet. Theoretically, if billing is based on usage, all models could be unlocked for us again. Larger models would then simply cost more credits, just like with the pro plan. (I know, wishful thinking...) |

Ok so what exactly do you not understand here? What doesn't make sense to you? Seems like you understand exactly what is going on, and why, but you are just not happy the plan you pay nothing for. For me, Auto mode and GPT-5.2 are more than enough. Can't complain about free stuff. A year ago we would not even be close to the capabilities of what we are getting now for free. |

I only used 3% of the premium request limit and he gave me a 5 hour limit. This makes it impossible for me to use it when dealing with complex problems.Such a change makes it impossible for us to use up our monthly quota. Maybe that's what they changed it for. |

The reason you did this is for us students to get used to GitHub so when we get jobs the workplaces will pay for GitHub stuff, but you enshitiffied it too much, so we will switch, copilot literally doesn't have any usable models (at least bring back sonnet which is usable) because else why would we use this now mediocre platform? |

I want to add my voice to the growing frustration around the Copilot Student model restrictions. I signed up for GitHub Education after March 12, which means I'm on the new Student plan with only 3–4 models available. I only found out about the restrictions after signing up, there was no clear warning that I'd be getting a significantly reduced experience compared to students who joined before me. Here's what makes this especially difficult: The models removed (Claude Sonnet, Opus, GPT-5.4) are exactly the ones that matter most for serious coding and learning. My requests:

I don't know if you are serious or joking. It's usually the customers who pay the least (or nothing) that have the most demands lol. Free models are more than enough for students. If you are doing "serious coding" then you are not a student. Plus, for students you should be learning programming and how to code, not "prompts" for the AI to do everything for you. I can't believe modern programming courses even allow this. |

The gpt 5.3 codex was recently deleted for students, and the gpt 5.2 and 5.2 codex will be deleted on June 1 (due to obsolescence). You have partially achieved your goal. |

Copilot is evolving quickly, with new capabilities, models, and experiences shipping fast. As Copilot evolves and the student community continues to grow, we need to make some adjustments to ensure we can provide sustainable, long-term GitHub Copilot access to students worldwide.
Our commitment to providing free access to GitHub Copilot for verified students is not changing. What is changing is how Copilot is packaged and managed for students.
What this means for you
Starting today, March 12, 2026, your complimentary Copilot access will be managed under a new GitHub Copilot Student plan, alongside your existing GitHub Education benefits. Your academic verification status will not change, and there is nothing you need to do to continue using Copilot. You will see that you are on the GitHub Copilot Student plan in the UI, and your existing premium request unit (PRU) entitlements will remain unchanged.
As part of this transition, however, some premium models, including GPT-5.3-Codex, GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection under the GitHub Copilot Student Plan. We know this will be disappointing, but we’re making this change so we can keep Copilot free and accessible for millions of students around the world.
That said, through Auto mode, you'll continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. We'll keep adding new models and expanding the intelligence in Auto mode that helps match the right model to your task and workflow. We support a global community of students across thousands of universities and dozens of time zones, so we’re being intentional about how we roll out changes. Over the coming weeks, we will be making additional adjustments to available models or usage limits on certain features — the specifics of which we'll be testing with your feedback.
We want your input
Your experience matters to us, and your feedback will directly shape how this plan evolves. Leave a comment below, what's working for you, what gets in the way, and what you need most. We will also be continuing to host 1:1 conversations with students, educators, and Campus Experts, and using insights from our recent November 2025 student survey to help inform what's next.
