For some reason, using .. image:: directly causes the clickable link area to span the entire paragraph width instead of just the image's own area. This approach is a workaround.

The index page is quite busy nowadays. I find my eye doesn't know where to look. This PR is one idea for reorganizing it in a way that works better now we are tracking so many projects.
I'll leave this open for a few days in case anyone wants to comment or has other ideas for improving the index page.
