Steps to reproduce:

1. open 1password8. after an install.
2. When the signin window appears, it says "chrome legacy window"

Actual behavior:

Expected behavior:

I'd expect 1password to read like it used to. If we failed to inject for some reason do to 1password config changes, I'm not sure if this log snippet is tell, or if NVDA and 1password aren't playing along.

WAS HAVING SOME WEIRD ISSUES WITH ALPHA A COUPLE WEEKS AGO BUT WAS SUPER SWAMPED WITH SOME URGENT STUFF AND COULDN'T REPORT YET. DOUBT THAT WAS THE SAME THING THOUGH.

I tried a couple other things.

• it works with narator.
• issue was occuring on 25.2 before I upgraded, so something changed with 1pass maybe that is bugging out nvda? I suspect injection but then why is chrome UIA breaking?
• Tried reinstalling 1password.
• can't find anything about injection in logs.
  LMK if you want any further diagnosis.

Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (KB5065782) (26120.6682) broke this. When I uninstalled it, the issue went away. This update is also breaking NVDA's ability to talk to task manager. @seanbudd, do anyone at NV Access escalate windows update issues that specifically break NVDA in windows?

I'm now seeing this as well. Some additional data points:

1. I'm seeing this on one machine and not on another.
2. The good machine has Windows 11 build 26100.6584. The bad machine has Windows 11 build 26100.6725. This supports the hypothesis that this might be due to a Windows update.
3. Both machines are running the same build of 1Password: 8.11.12 (81112027).
4. However, the good machine is running the Windows Store distribution of the app, while the bad machine isn't.
5. focus.appModule.helperLocalBindingHandle is non-0 on both machines, so injection is working.
6. On the bad machine, QueryService to IAccessible2 throws E_INVALIDARG:

   This suggests something is going wrong with COM marshaling.
7. Derek noted above that this can't be reproduced with Narrator. A user on Mastodon noted that this occurs with NVDA but not JAWS. This is likely because both Narrator and JAWS effectively talk to 1Password in-process, not out-of-process, so Windows COM marshaling isn't involved.

I just switched to the MSIX (Windows Store) version of the app on the bad machine. It did not help. So this looks like it's down to a problematic Windows Update. Terrific.

6. On the bad machine, QueryService to IAccessible2 throws E_INVALIDARG:

It's much worse than this.

1. We aren't getting 1Password's Chromium IAccessible implementation at all. Instead, we're getting a useless oleacc proxy. I was able to determine this by looking at focus.IAccessibleIdentity, which should be None for a Chromium IAccessible implementation but isn't. Also, accChild(1), accName(1), etc. all fail.
2. If I send WM_GETOBJECT with OBJID_CLIENT, I get back a valid lresult. However, LResultFromObject fails with E_FAIL.
3. If I run NVDA as administrator, everything works correctly. That suggests this is some weird problem with security boundaries. NVDA's uiAccess privilege should be sufficient to deal with this, but apparently it isn't.

@SaschaCowley, on Mastodon, you mentioned that there was a recent Windows bug that caused NVDA not to get uiAccess. How did this manifest exactly? If I run most apps as admin, I can interact with them just fine; e.g. keyboard input works as expected, whereas normally it wouldn't without uiAccess. See #18955. In short, NVDA was unable to interact with elevated windows, or programs such as Device Manager. A quick way to check for this is to try turning audio ducking on.

Ah, okay. This is definitely a different bug then. Elevated command prompts still work, as does audio ducking. It definitely seems to be somehow related to security boundaries though.

I just tried running nvda_noUiAccess on the good machine and then running 1Password, but everything still worked normally. So it isn't that uiAccess was previously giving us access that it isn't now. Instead, it seems like an additional security boundary might have been introduced which is traversable with administrator privileges, but not uiAccess.

As an extra data point, I also tried running nvda_noUiAccess on the bad machine. 1Password remained inaccessible, so this is not a bug specific to uiAccess clients.
