Replace .eslintrc with something else?

Citing ESlint docs:

Deprecated - use .eslintrc, which can be either JSON or YAML.

Basically, they are suggesting users to use any other format instead. Is it a good idea to follow their advice in this repository or there are problems?

There's a PR open for this: #7699

There seems to be some desire on the part of some Collaborators to stick with .eslintrc unless/until something breaks, though. See #6131 for details.

Closing, but feel free to re-open or comment if you feel like the issue has not been adequately addressed.
