You are hitting some edge case behaviour.

What are you trying to do? What were you expecting to happen?

To explain what I think is happening: there is an undocumented feature that dot separated options are parsed like javascript properties. So --aaa.bbb parses into "aaa":{"bbb":true}}.

Your option is getting parsed as dot separated with empty strings as the properties. This isn't very useful, just the code falling through the "dot" handling code.

Passing in a somewhat more normal option might make the behaviour easier to see:

$ node index.js "--a.b.c.d=EEE"
