Windows Terminal v1.23.12371.0

Windows Terminal 1.23 was held back from the stable channel because we didn't feel it was ready. However, after a number of servicing releases, we're happy to finally declare it done.

In addition to being generally awesome, it's got the following specific cool things:

• A completely new and more reliable windowing architecture, featuring a more robust tray icon, window actions, "summoning" (like, of the Quake window and its assorted demons)
• A whole new UI for customizing your New Tab dropdown menu (!)
  • Actually, new settings which were previously JSON exclusives are showing up across the settings interface: bell sounds, compatibility, cell size customization, profile-specific foreground/background, a new spatial "padding" editor, and an icon picker just to name five.
• Drag/drop path translation, with a number of different options to suit most (some?) needs
• Support for applications to control the size of the window using CSI t (DTTERM Window Manipulation) in some cases
• Not forgetting about profiles that temporarily disappear (like if you launch Terminal while Visual Studio was upgrading and we'd permanently forget you ever used Visual Studio)

This release is shipping with some fixes backported from the new 1.24 Preview release:

Bug Fixes

• Tab icons, close on exit state and the bell settings will once again be reloaded when the settings file changes (Fix hot reload for icon, bell, close on exit; regressed in #16172 #19217)
• Terminal will no longer occasionally miss hard line breaks in full-screen applications such as tmux (Speculative: remove overeager line wrapping in AdaptDispatch #18899)
• WSL profiles containing local overrides for the PATH environment variable will no longer destroy the PATH inside WSL (Fix WSL PATH corruption & potential use-after-free #19211)

Performance and Reliability

• Buffers with a lot of scroll bar marks should be handled faster (Fix a output marks performance regression #19242)
• Dragging invalid paths onto Terminal (actually, ones with incorrectly-constructed DataObjects) will no longer send your session into outer space (Ensure items is not null before checking its size so we dont crash #19026) (thanks @jamespack!)
• Terminal will now attempt to delegate foreground priority to processes in the active tab (on some versions of Windows 11) (Use a new API to propagate foreground state to child processes #19192)
• The experimental "reposition cursor on click" will no longer cause "snap on input" to, well, snap, as though input has been put in (fix(ControlCore): prevent cursor repositioning during mouse selection #19182) (thanks @MengAiDev!)
• We have resolved a crash in context menu handling across multiple windows (Implement custom text context menus to fix crashes #18854)

Bug Report / Repro for 1.23.12371.0

Environment

• Windows Terminal 1.23.12371.0 (Store/MSIX build)
• Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (x64)
• Default terminal application = Windows Terminal

Repro Steps

1. Launch Command Prompt from Start → opens Terminal Window A (cmd.exe).
2. In Window A, run wt.exe → opens Terminal Window B (PowerShell).
3. In Window B, click ➕ → a new tab opens as expected.
4. Close Window A.
5. In Window B, click ➕ → nothing happens, or sometimes a new window with a transparent/clear background appears.

Additional Observations

• If the first window is PowerShell.exe instead of cmd.exe, this bug does not repro.
• If you tear off a tab into a separate window, the same broken behavior occurs.
• If Windows Terminal is not installed (portable/unpackaged build run from directory), the bug does not repro.
• Only occurs with Windows Terminal installed as the default terminal.

Workarounds

• Set Startup → New instance behavior to Attach to most recently used window (mitigates).
• Change Default terminal application back to Windows Console Host (bug disappears).
• Disable acrylic/mica background effects (sometimes avoids the “clear window” glitch).

Expected

Clicking ➕ in the surviving window should always open a new tab.

Actual

No tab is created, or a new transparent window is spawned.

Looks like a regression in the 1.23 windowing rewrite (controller/monarch hand-off when the first window is cmd.exe).
