Question: Switch to tera2

Hey there,

I've been monitoring tera2 since a while, and it seems to be ready soon (?). So I was wondering, can we expect Zola to switch to tera2, or perhaps even a rewrite of Zola at some point? And if yes, what would be the time horizon for that?

Please don't understand this as any kind of pressure or asking for a timeline promise or something like that! You do whatever you think is best and in any time you need! I'm very grateful of all the work you've done and are doing. This is just asking about what's in your head about the future of Zola and tera2, and a very very rough time horizon, if possible.

(Side note on motivation: Even if it may sound ridiculous, I'm waiting for sections to be eliminated. I don't want the distinction between sections and pages, there should only be one kind of page that's treated the same everywhere, in my opinion. A couple of people have asked for this, and it seems you always said "let's first do tera2". So I'm hoping once tera2 is integrated we can get rid of sections 😅 )

I'm trying to get the breaking changes split in smaller chunks over a few releases. The next release (maybe next week?) will contain the syntax highlighting changes (current next branch of you want to try it). After that, I'll be working on integrating tera2 in Zola which is a much bigger change. Not only the templates but also trying to template each content instead of using shortcodes. We will see how that goes in practice. There will be some big internal refactoring in that release to make it all work but nothing like page/section merge. After that tera2 release is done, we can have a look at deeper data model changes but that will probably take the form of RFCs and have proper design phases.
