probably dangerous or atleast misleading to the compiler these days. best case scenario it had no effect to begin with.

removed a small number of pointless and unused typedefs and macros, as well as all uses of the "volatile" keyword. i think the best case scenario was that it had no effect on our code at all anymore, but the worst case in my mind is that it was misleading the compiler in some unforeseen way... i think it's probably not worth keeping.
