Mirroring Scheme #85

Description

@cyruseuros

Now that Distri has its first non-European mirror (mirrors.wurosh.me) in Singapore, it might be time to start thinking about how Distri will tackle a global mirror network. I floated this idea in a discussion with @stapelberg and proposed the following scheme:

  • either distri or an external buddy program would be aware of all live or recently live mirrors.
  • this list of mirrors would either be distributed through
    • a mirrorlist package
    • a configurable online endpoint (@stapelberg's suggestion, which I quite like)
  • then distri/the buddy program would intermittently rank the mirrors and cache the best
    ones in a conf file (when and how this ranking would happen is up for debate)
  • finally distri could pull from multiple servers in that cached list simultaneously to
    reduce the load on any single server and increase download speed in case server
    upload bandwidth is limited.

This is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list, and is simply intended to start a discussion.
