How to add a class before load and then display * on load?

I'm confused about the JavaScript loading the elements poorly with the styling (I guess they're loading them really well, actually) and the flickering is making my head hurt.. I need to read up on a way to stop this. I found an article written by Paul Irish discussing this "flickering" problem with JavaScript loading the page but nothing discussed there has worked for the "nav" section of the front page(s) .. ?? Any ideas?
