After applying the patch from #177 to fix linking on NetBSD, I see:

did you do a make clean, make ? I've seen that error a few times due to remnants of partial compilations.

That happened in a clean environment, but it's repeatable for me with 'make clean && make'.

i've been trying to reproduce this today, but getting far with NetBSD in general. I was able to launch NetBSD on an ec2 instance, and install pkgsrc, but I can't get git to build. Is there a quick howto somewhere on how to get a functional NetBSD instance relatively quickly?

The easiest way to install software is using binary packages. Set the PKG_PATH environment variable to something like "ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/amd64/6.1/All/" (depending on platform and OS version you choose) and run "pkg_add git".
http://pkgsrc.se has a nice webpage for displaying available software. Let me know what other help you need.

This is a six-year-old build issue. I'm closing it, but feel free to reopen / create a new issue if this is still a problem.

I've also opened an issue to get at least one BSD OS into our CI: #3109
