The buffer background image is a long URL-encoded SVG, which was being repeated 3 times. This change moves it into a variable in order to reduce repetition.

Rather than having separate start and end variables, why not a function where the color is passed in?

I went with something like that initially, but SASS doesn't let you define functions inside of mixins. If I put it outside, it'll be global AFAIK.
