How to toggle (show/hide) Tooltip?

What is the current behavior?

I am trying to force show a tooltip when a method is true, how can I achieve this?

What are the steps to reproduce?

The process is described in the Tooltip overview and API but I can't find an example of its implementation.

What is the use-case or motivation for changing an existing behavior?

I would like to be able to show a warning, using the tooltip, if a user tried to input something into a text input field.

Which versions of Angular, Material, OS, TypeScript, browsers are affected?

Specifically to help you out, you can call the tooltip's show method when you want it to be displayed. This requires you to change your model of thinking from setting a flag from false to true, and instead proactively tell the tooltip what to do.
