Urgently needed change. Current state is broken by default on most OS.

@SebKuzminsky maybe consider including an extra maintainer if you yourself are preoccupied with other stuff? It would be a shame to let all your work on this incredibly useful tool to go waste.

@vizvasrj I suggest removing the OS specific stuff you added to the README as well as the "mysteps.txt" file.

@wosym you're right, the project needs new maintainers. I opened #211 to let people volunteer and let the community vote.

@vizvasrj you also did some other things in this commit. Could you clarify what those changes do and move them to a separate commit? Because as far as I can tell they are not related to the upstepping to Python3.12?
