What needs to be changed and why?

1. The canopy senescence model does not respond to canopy shading and as a result, LAI estimates can reach higher values than observed.. The approach used in other models should be added into the leaf modell's senescence function.
2. The senescence during the reproductive phase shows a linear reduction in leaf area over time when most data shows a non-linear reduction. A simple approach to incorporate non-linearity matching what we observed can also be incorporated into the leaf model's senescence function

The model should be enhanced to capture both of these observations. Existing data on LAI is adequate to evaluate simple changes to the model.
