Research: quantifying GitHub Copilot’s impact on developer productivity 📖
GitHub Copilot has been improving developer productivity and happiness for almost a year. After its release to the public, our engineers asked themselves a tough question: What does it actually mean to be productive and can developer productivity be measured? ❔
We recruited 95 professional developers to answer those questions quantitatively with a varied research effort aimed at evaluating the impact of Copilot on developer productivity and delight. These devs were split up randomly into two groups measuring how long it took them to code. One group used GitHub Copilot to complete the task, and the other one didn’t. Results were quite impressive, see the illustration below. 🤩
A massive 55% less time to code is an achievement and a big leap forward in terms of being productive. 💪 For more details around the survey and research, please checkout this blogpost by @ikaliam.
To wind things up, I wanted to leave you with another quote from Danny Hills that is so true about our research on Copilot:
"One of the greatest joy in computer programming is discovering a new, faster, more efficient tool for doing something."
If you have any pressing Copilot questions, please feel free to post them below or start a new discussion. For the most part, see our extensive list of FAQ’s. 🚀
