GitHub Classroom won't let me create assignments

Hi everyone,

I have been using GitHub classroom for year, and this is the first time I have encountered this problem:
The website won't let me make new assignments.

(this worked fine yesterday)

If I try "create assignment" the pages don't work correctly...
If I try to edit the slug, the slug just disappears.
When I try to find a repository to add starter code, search doesn't search.

When I try to create the assignment, I get a 500 (server error). (although, sometimes it works - if I type in the name of the starter code repo manually and don't try to change the slug)

Has something broken?

So, for the last 30 minutes or so, the typical create assignment workflow no longer sees my template repositories. Nothing has changed on my end. Something appears broken on the Github Classroom side.

I had similar issues in my classrooms today. I deleted and have been trying to create a new classroom, but I get 500 Internal error. This is the first I've experienced this issue in 2 years.

I was able to create an assignment from one of my repos, but I can't create the starter assignment

Is GH Classroom abandonware? This seems like a pretty serious bug (as in "cannot use it if you can't set the starter repo")

I was able to create a version of the starter repo by creating a regular assignment and pointing it to the template from when I assigned it to my students last year. All seemed to work last night but, this morning, my students are reporting that it doesn't work for them. Sure enough, when I go to the classroom it reports:

Caution

We are unable to access the starter code on this assignment. The repository might be deleted or is not owned by UMD-ENMA165-2026-Spring.

If the repository exists and owned by a different user or organization:

Please transfer or fork the repository to the classroom's organization.
Edit the assignment settings to update the starter code to the new repository.
For more information, see "Use the Git and GitHub starter assignment".

When I edit the assignment and re-point to the template repo, GH Classroom reports:

Caution

Errors updating assignment. Starter code repository does not exist. Select a repository that exists or create the assignment without starter code.

• The repo does exist.
• It's in the classroom's organization.
• It's a template.
• It doesn't matter whether it's public or private.

The only issue I had yesterday creating classrooms or reusing and creating assignments is that when I tried to edit any assignment slug, that information just disappeared from the page. This was especially annoying as when I reused assignments, the slug was using the prior quarter's information rather than the anything related to the current assignment. I wound up deleting the reused assignments and am hoping this gets fixed quickly.

A student reported that they inspected the page where they tried to accept the assignment and got the error message below:

My student is getting this error:
Repository Access Issue
You no longer have access to your assignment repository

But the assignment is active and it is not due yet?

She was able to get in by typing the repo's url directly.

Some of my students have had the same problem for the past 1-1,5 months. The repo is created but it seems to take some time. Usually it works when they try again 15-30 minutes later. Though for two students I've had to manually add them as collaborators to their repos in my organization.

@scrislee - we have the same thing.
It turns out that students are invited to the new repos - they must accept the invitation in order to access it.
I have to give them this instruction with every new assignment,
