+When [The New Yorker](https://www.newyorker.com/)’s David Kirkpatrick set out to determine just how much [Donald Trump](https://www.msnbc.com/donald-trump) and his family [profited from his time as president](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAZLYWI_DO8), experts told him the exact figures were unknowable. So Kirkpatrick crunched the numbers himself, and the scale he reported is staggering: Since entering the [White House](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) in 2017, Kirkpatrick says the [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) family has reportedly reaped an astonishing \$3.4 billion.

+According to Kirkpatrick’s [new report in The New Yorker](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2025/08/18/the-number?_sp=faa5ed2a-c173-4aaf-812e-7ede235a163e.1755530173996), the profits stretch across the entire [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) family network. Much of this wealth would have been unimaginable without the presidency. [\$2 billion Saudi investment](https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/jared-kushners-money-saudi-arabia-comes-sharper-focus-rcna70367) flowed into Jared Kushner’s firm, [Affinity Partners](https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/jared-kushner-private-equity-firm-affinity-senate-investigation-rcna172758), while [Emirati](https://u.ae/) and [Qatari](https://www.diwan.gov.qa/) investors contributed billions more, as recently as last year. (Kushner has [denied](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68296877) that investments in his company represent a conflict of interest.)

+It’s a fundamental rewiring of what public service means.
+
+As Kirkpatrick notes, after doing the math, it’s reasonable to assume that Kushner could personally pocket between half and two-thirds of Affinity’s fees over the next 10 years.
+
+There’s also the [luxury jet](https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/trump-qatar-jet-warren-senate-rcna224349) given to the [president](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) by the emir of [Qatar](https://hukoomi.gov.qa/), which [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) has said will be donated to his presidential library after he leaves office, and at least five separate [crypto ventures](https://www.msnbc.com/ana-cabrera-reports/watch/trump-family-has-made-over-4b-in-crypto-since-election-day-244983877646) marketed with [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’s name and political brand. But that’s just scratching the surface.

+Start with [Mar-a-Lago](https://www.maralagoclub.com/). Once a \$100,000 club, [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) began sharply raising the initiation fee after the 2016 election. Kirkpatrick notes that, as of last fall, it was set to increase to a whopping [\$1 million](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/05/trump-mar-a-lago-membership-price-hike). Kirkpatrick estimates [Mar-a-Lago](https://www.maralagoclub.com/) alone generated at least \$125 million in additional profits directly tied to [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’s political rise.

+Then there’s [Trump](https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/trump-merchandise-store-business-operations-rcna183706). He’s the first presidential candidate to run a private online store funneling supporters’ money straight into his pocket. Kirkpatrick reported that nearly $28 million has flowed in from MAGA hats, sneakers, picture books and even that infamous “God Bless the USA” Bible.
+
+Don’t forget all those [legal bills](https://www.msnbc.com/deadline-white-house/watch/-the-big-rip-off-new-reporting-details-donald-trump-campaign-donations-paying-his-legal-bills-203351109709). Under U.S. law, campaign funds can’t cover a candidate’s [personal expenses](https://www.fec.gov/updates/tip2023-personal-use-of-campaign-funds-is-prohibited/) — but political action committees can. According to Kirkpatrick, [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) found a loophole by using PACs as his own personal piggy bank for funding his lawyers. By Kirkpatrick’s estimate, more than \$100 million in supporter contributions have gone to defending [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) against lawsuits and criminal charges.

+When you add up the money from [Mar-a-Lago](https://www.maralagoclub.com/), merch and money spent for legal fees by PACs, [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) has reportedly raked in about \$253 million — and that’s before you count the foreign money. From Kushner’s money from the [Saudis](https://my.gov.sa/), to steady business from [gulf monarchies](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-franchise-expanding-middle-east-are-ethical-concerns-rcna206777) and foreign governments such as [Vietnam,](https://www.forbes.com/sites/yessarrosendar/2025/05/22/trump-organization-enters-vietnam-with-15-billion-golf-resort-project-near-hanoi/), [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’s businesses have become influence pipelines for despots and states eager to win him over.

+“The claims that this [President](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) has profited from his time in office are absolutely absurd,” [White House](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to [The New Yorker](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2025/08/18/the-number?_sp=faa5ed2a-c173-4aaf-812e-7ede235a163e.1755530173996). Leavitt said [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) had actually sacrificed “hundreds of millions of dollars” by choosing to serve as [president](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) and not work on his businesses full time.

As [The Wall Street Journal](https://www.wsj.com/economy/the-u-s-marches-toward-state-capitalism-with-american-characteristics-f75cafa8?gaa_at=eafs&gaa_n=ASWzDAgnHx1OnqQPpX9GI9edVfMW7uUwKhQwenZ5mqliaRH14SHk2DYBOwxsLl9X3nI%3D&gaa_ts=68a35155&gaa_sig=X8Ec2AN-rZ1xKN3w816YwfZWS2gnbaLlprqSvR9Yf_DxoQV7i03dc7JGTCTOB43pVw_czlAqHQ3CwBp4GLnV6A%3D%3D), [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) is reshaping the U.S. economy into something that looks like “state capitalism with American characteristics.” Like in [China](https://www.gov.cn/), it’s a system where the state — or in this case, [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) — rewards friends and punishes enemies.

+The [president](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) has steered billion-dollar deals, pushed out CEOs and, as the Journal points out, extracted \$1.5 trillion in investment pledges from [Japan](https://www.japan.go.jp/), the [European Union](https://european-union.europa.eu/) and [South Korea](https://www.gov.kr/), which he claims he will personally direct, though no legal mechanism for doing so appears to exist.

+In one sense, the decisions of the [governors](https://www.rga.org/) of [Ohio](https://www.ohio.gov/), [Mississippi](https://www.ms.gov/), [South Carolina](https://www.sc.gov/) and [West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/) [to send National Guard troops](https://www.npr.org/2025/08/17/nx-s1-5505271/three-republican-led-states-to-send-hundreds-of-national-guard-troops-to-washington) from their states to aid [President](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) [Donald Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’’s authoritarian takeover of Washington, D.C., should not have surprised anyone. Like their [GOP](https://www.gop.com/) colleagues in [Congress](https://www.congress.gov/), these [red-state executives](https://www.rga.org/governors/) [are eager](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/republican-led-states-rush-align-trumps-maga-agenda-rcna190540) to show their fealty to the [MAGA leader](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/). But in another sense, it is a truly stunning development coming from politicians who love nothing more than to tout their allegiance to the [Constitution](https://constitution.congress.gov/) and the [Second Amendment](https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-2/).
+
+Just five months ago, [West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/) [Gov.](https://governor.wv.gov/) [Patrick Morrissey](https://governor.wv.gov/about/governor-wv) proclaimed such allegiance when he signed three pieces of legislation that [his office said](https://governor.wv.gov/article/governor-patrick-morrisey-signs-legislation-defending-second-amendment-rights) “meant to protect the [2nd Amendment rights](https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-2/) of [West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/)ns.” [Morrissey](https://governor.wv.gov/about/governor-wv) said at the time: “As [Governor](https://governor.wv.gov/), I will always support and defend [West Virginians](https://www.wv.gov/)’ God-given constitutional rights. The bills I signed today further enshrine [West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/)’s strong support for the [Second Amendment](https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-2/).”
+

+But let’s compare the decisions of [Morrissey](https://governor.wv.gov/about/governor-wv), [South Carolina](https://www.sc.gov/)’s [Henry McMaster](https://governor.sc.gov/governors-biography), [Mississippi](https://www.ms.gov/)'s [Tate Reeves](https://governorreeves.ms.gov/about/) and [Ohio](https://www.ohio.gov/)’s [Mike DeWine](https://governor.ohio.gov/administration/governor) to deploy their states’ [National Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) with the language of the [Second Amendment](https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-2/). It reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
+
+Note why the militia is needed: for the “security of a free State” [emphasis added]. That is hardly what [Donald Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’’s use of the [National Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) is designed to secure.
+
+The [GOP governors](https://www.rga.org/) likely know that. But [Trump carried](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-elections/ohio-president-results) but seven of [Ohio](https://www.ohio.gov/)’s eighty-eight counties and won 55% of the popular vote. He received 58% of the vote in [South Carolina](https://www.politico.com/2024-election/results/south-carolina/) and 70% in [West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/), where he also [carried every county](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-elections/west-virginia-results). The [governors](https://www.rga.org/) were eager to make clear that they, [as McMaster explained](https://governor.sc.gov/news/2025-08/gov-henry-mcmaster-authorizes-deployment-national-guard-washington-dc), stand "with [President](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’ as he works to restore law and order to our nation’s capital.” Or take [Morrissey](https://governor.wv.gov/about/governor-wv), who said, “[West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/) is proud to stand with [President](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation’s capital.”
+
+This is not the first time that [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) [has tested the loyalty of red-state governors in this way](https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/how-trump-amassed-a-red-state-army-in-the-nations-capital--and-could-do-so-again/2020/10/01/2f10e17c-f9d6-11ea-a275-1a2c2d36e1f1_story.html). In June 2020, during the nationwide protests following the murder of George Floyd, he asked state chief executives from across the country to send [National Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) to Washington, D.C.
+
+As [The Washington Post reported](https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/how-trump-amassed-a-red-state-army-in-the-nations-capital--and-could-do-so-again/2020/10/01/2f10e17c-f9d6-11ea-a275-1a2c2d36e1f1_story.html) reported at the time: “The request had the effect of cleaving state militias along partisan lines, according to interviews and internal [Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) documents. While [red states](https://www.rga.org/) jumped to answer the [president](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’s call, [governors](https://democraticgovernors.org/) and [Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) commanders in [blue states](https://democraticgovernors.org/) were incredulous.”
+
+“The result,” the [Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/) continues, “was a deployment to the nation’s capital that military historians say appears to have been without precedent: Over 98 percent of the 3,800 troops that arrived in the District came from states with [Republican governors](https://www.rga.org/).”
+
+Five years later, the deployment of troops from [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’-loving states in the District of Columbia, where every one of [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/)’’s [Democratic](https://www.democrats.org/) opponents has received over 90% of the vote and where Blacks make up almost 45% of the population, is no less disturbing. It looks like another effort to achieve “total domination” — as [Trump put it in 2020](https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/01/politics/troops-deploying-washington-dc) — in the least [Trump](https://www.donaldjtrump.com/) friendly place in the country.
+

+
+“Total domination” by the federal government was hardly the rallying cry for the people who wrote the [Constitution](https://constitution.congress.gov/) and [Bill of Rights](https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/bill-of-rights). Quite to the contrary. They had seen firsthand the [British](https://www.gov.uk/) use military forces to subdue and oppress people in the colonies. And they feared “that the [president](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) would use standing armies to oppress the citizens, as the [British](https://www.gov.uk/) had done, and turn us into a garrison state," as [Sen.](https://www.senate.gov/) [Elissa Slotkin (D-MI)](https://www.slotkin.senate.gov/), then serving in the [House](https://www.house.gov/), [wrote in 2020](https://deadlinedetroit.com/articles/25420/rep_elissa_slotkin_of_metro_detroit_we_are_at_a_crossroads_this_is_a_dangerous_path).
+
+The drafters of the [Declaration of Independence](https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration) [included](https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript) among the [British monarchy](https://www.royal.uk/)’s “repeated injuries and usurpations” the following: “He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures; He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power;” and kept “large bodies of armed troops among us.”
+
+That’s why [people like Alexander Hamilton thought](https://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/fed29.asp) it was important that states have their own military force. They thought state militias would resist, not aid, the federal government, should it want to follow the British example.
+
+Hamilton made this clear in 1788, before the ratification of the [Constitution](https://constitution.congress.gov/) or the [Second Amendment](https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-2/). “If standing armies,” he wrote, “are dangerous to liberty, an efficacious power over the militia, in the body to whose care the protection of the State is committed, ought, as far as possible, to take away the inducement and the pretext to such unfriendly institutions.”
+
+Hamilton hoped that militias controlled by the states would be all that would be necessary to assure peace in the new Republic and did not think that they ever would threaten liberty. They would, after all, be composed of “our sons, our brothers, our neighbors, our fellow-citizens.”
+The [National Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) [had its origins](https://www.nationalguard.mil/About-the-Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/)/How-We-Began/#:~:text=The%20official%20birth%20date%20of,components%20of%20the%20armed%20services.) in the militias about which Hamilton wrote. The [Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/) traces its start to 1636, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony established the first colonial militia.
+
+Whatever their views on whether the [Second Amendment](https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-2/) [guarantees](https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/554/570/) an individual right to bear arms, historians generally [agree](https://www.americanrevolutioninstitute.org/video/a-well-regulated-militia-history-of-the-second-amendment/) that one of the key purposes of the amendment was to ensure that states had the resources needed to resist encroachments on liberty perpetrated by the federal government. As Supreme Court Justice James McReynolds [put it in 1939](https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/307/174/#tab-opinion-1936361), “In a militia, the character of the labourer, artificer, or tradesman, predominates over that of the soldier.”
+
+Troops from [Ohio](https://www.ohio.gov/), [South Carolina](https://www.sc.gov/), [Mississippi](https://www.ms.gov/) and [West Virginia](https://www.wv.gov/) deployed in Washington are being asked to display the character of soldiers, not that of the “neighbors” that Hamilton envisioned. Hamilton thought that there would be no danger “from men who are daily mingling with the rest of their countrymen and who participate with them in the same feelings, sentiments, habits, and interests.”
+
+Sending members of state [National Guard](https://www.nationalguard.mil/)s to a place different in “feelings, sentiments, habits and interests” from the District of Columbia may please the president. But it should not please Americans eager to preserve freedom and honor the legacy of the Founding generation.
+
